Wooden mast and spar building. a mast or spar made from wood not only looks and feels good but it also takes advantage of the naturally ability that trees have developed over the centuries for creating a tall, strong, flexible pole.. The ultimate wood for masts and spars is sitka spruce. check a.l. condon. good stuff is getting harder and harder to acquire. like crag cay said, google "wooden masts" & there should be alot of information.. Since i’m a poor student i tend to build most of the parts that i need. wooden masts are usually hollow and made up of a bunch of smaller pieces glued together. unless the mast is intended for a very small boat; under 16 feet with 2 masts, you’ll need to glue up a mast. boats up until about 20 feet can use solid masts..
Making wooden spars introduction. a spar is a general term for any mast, yard, boom, gaff, bowsprit, etc. on a vessel and nowadays they can be made from wide range of materials including wood, metals such as aluminium and the more exotic materials like carbon fibre.. Hit up home depot. assuming a fifteen foot mast, your finished dimensions will be 15' x 2.5" x 2.5". depending on your geographic location, you should be able to find sitka spruce or douglas fir at your local box store or lumber yard.. You can't make even the smallest recommended hollow mast (2 1/2" square at the base with 1/2" walls) out of a single 2x4, so when selecting your lumber, consider your needs for the rest of your boat. with a little planning, you can easily rip your mast and all the chines and cleats out of a single piece of lumber..
