A homemade rudder for my perception caster 12.5 kayak. i can steer it with my feet. it is made from pvc, rope, 3/8" plywood, and 90ยบ angle braces.. Adding a rudder to your kayak might seem like a daunting task, but the average do-it-yourself’r can do it in less than a day. after deciding i wanted a rudder but not wanting to pay the $250 + for a kit i decided to make my own.. Final word having a rudder on a kayak can be a convenient aid to maneuvering and during certain activities, actual steering. it should be used to augment good paddling technique - never to replace it. if you opt to buy a kayak without a rudder, check to see if you can retrofit that model's rudder or install an after-market brand..
Considering a rudder is best used to keep the kayak straight, it is funny that they do not make rudders, or at least skegs, available for these shorter kayaks. bear in mind that "rec" kayaks are not intended for use on open water..
